Selecting a File to Search
Hosts | Nonviral Pathogens | Viruses | Nematodes | Citations
When you click the SEARCH NOW! link, you will see a list of EDWIP's seven searchable files. Choose the appropriate file for the information you need. If you are unable to perform a desired search or to view data in the desired way, please contact us. We are continuing to upgrade our interface, and your feedback is important to us!

Search for hosts

Search the Host Classification and Ecology file to see a summary of all associations and negative test results in EDWIP for a particular host, host group (e.g., family), or host characteristic (e.g., hosts that feed on soybean). Results are presented in a table showing the species matching the search parameters. Each species name is hyperlinked to a summary of all the associations and negative test results in EDWIP.

Alternatively, search the Nonviral Pathogen Association, Nematode, Viruses, or Negative Test Results files directly by host name or characteristic to see the detail of the associations or negative test results for a host or group of hosts. These files also allow you to specify details about the host, the pathogen, and the association (e.g., tissues infected, country of observation) in your search. Results are summary tables; click on record numbers in the summary table to see the complete record detail.

Search for nonviral pathogens

Search the Nonviral Pathogen Classification file to see summaries of associations and negative test results for a particular nonviral pathogen or pathogen group. Results are presented in a table showing the species matching the search parameters. Each species name is hyperlinked to a summary of all the associations and negative test results in EDWIP.

Alternatively, search the Nonviral Pathogen Association or Negative Test Result file directly to see the full detail of an association or negative test result. These files allow you to specify any details of associations or tests in your query. Results are summary tables; click on record numbers in the summary table to see the complete record detail.

Search for viruses

Search the Viruses file for records of viral infection of hosts. Viruses may be entered in EDWIP as viral species (e.g., Spodoptera frugiperda NPV [SfMNPV]), or as records of an unspecified viral disease (e.g., NPV). This file allows you to specify any association details in your query, including host name and classification, stages and tissues infected, and country of observation. Results are summary tables; click on record numbers in the summary table to see the complete record detail.

The Negative Test Results file contains records for viruses also. Search by virus name or other details. Results are summary tables; click on record numbers in the summary table to see the complete record detail.

Search for nematodes

Search the Nematode file to find nematode-host associations. You can specify any association details in your query, including host name and classification, stages and tissues infected, and country of observation. Currently, there are no negative test results for nematodes in EDWIP.

Search for Citations

Search the Citation file to find citations and the pathogen-host association or negative test results records they document. You can use any word(s) from the citation in your query. We recommend using author names, or unusual words from article titles to locate citation records. Journal titles may be abbreviated, and abbreviations may not be standardized.

Searching

To search EDWIP, first click the SEARCH NOW! link, select the file you wish to search by clicking on it.

Search forms display database field names on the left, and text boxes for entering your search terms on the right. Between each field name and its text box are pull down menus allowing you to specify search parameters for the search such as equals, starts with, ends with, contains, not equals.

Query terms may be entered into one or more fields in the search form. If you enter more than one term, choose either

Match all words on page (AND) or Match any word on page (OR)

by selecting the corresponding radio button at the top of the search form. Match all words on page (boolean AND) is the default search. The AND/OR option selected will apply both to terms entered in multiple fields, and to multiple terms entered into a single field.

Once you have constructed your search, click on the Start Search link at the top or bottom of the search screens.

Search Examples:
HOST SPECIES equals epilachna
Returns only records for which the host species contains the exact word "Epilachna." (Contrast with example below)

HOST SPECIES contains epilachna
Returns records for which the host species field contains either the complete word, or the string "epilachna" as part of a longer word. All records for species of Epilachna and species of Henosepilachna are returned.

HOST SPECIES not equals epilachna
Returns records for which the exact word "Epilachna" is not in the host species field. Thus records for species of Epilachna are not retrieved, but records for Henosepilachna species (and everything else) are retrieved.

HOST FOOD equals apple pear
If you select "Match all words on page (AND)" radio button (the default selection), records for hosts which feed on both apple and pear are returned.
If you select "Match any words on page (OR)" radio button, records for hosts which feed either on apple or on pear are returned.

HOST SPECIES begins with Cu
Returns records for which a word in the host species field begins with the string "cu." This would include Culex and Hyphantria cunea, for example.
